Vote at Doodle for Google!!!

We are thrilled that Thomas Scheller, one of Thomson’s second grade students, is a finalist in the “Doodle for Google” Contest. Out of over 33,000 entries, Thomas has made it to the final 40!

Please consider voting here for Thomas. He has a chance to win a $15,000 scholarship AND $25,0000 in computer equipment for Thomson. He’s a finalist in the K-3 category for Region Three and his Doodle is a “Recycle Bot,” which “creates energy by chewing up plastic water bottles.”

Yeah Thomas!

Thomson Carnival! May 8th 10am to 3pm

Posted by: msgu2ndgrade | April 9, 2010

In January, Strong John Thomson Elementary celebrated Family Reading Night in style! With the generous support from our friends at NAESP (The National Association of Elementary School Principals), MetLife, and Scholastic, we had a standing room only event.

After our extended snow-cation, Thomson students, teachers and staff were anxious to get back to school! February’s highlights included a wonderful and well-attended Family Math Night. We were thrilled to ring in the year of the Tiger and march in the New Year Parade in Chinatown. We had a great number of students, teachers, and parents join us in this special celebration.

Thomson had a fabulous Black History Month Celebration. Every class performed a song, poem, skit or story related to African or African-American History. The highlight of the event was our students, teachers and staff modeling some of Africa’s coolest fashions!

March’s Family Science Night featured a presentation by Mad Science, which dazzled students from our youngest little siblings to our most sophisticated 5th graders!

Our sponsors truly made Family Reading, Math and Science Nights fantastic evenings. We couldn’t be more grateful to NAESP and MetLife for their generous “Sharing the Dream” grant!

Wrapping up 2009!

2009 was a wonderful and very busy year for Strong John Thomson Elementary. A couple of highlights include our Hispanic Heritage Celebration. We had an evening of amazing food and entertainment.

Celebrating our Hispanic Heritage

With our friends at Phelps Stokes and the State Department, we were delighted to host 18 educators from 17 different countries as they learned about best practices in American education.

We walked for the Homeless.

Thomson had a birthday. We celebrated with 800 cupcakes and 140 years of history. Watch our students perform!

The Thomson choir performed at the NAEYC national convention to rave reviews.

And finally we gathered together in December for Holiday Night. We had delicious food, lots of fun prizes and great entertainment from our students and faculty. It was a fantastic way to wrap up 2009!

Thomson Choir

The Thomson Choir made their 2009-10 debut under the direction of Ms. Zajko on Tuesday evening, September 29th.

ASAE and the Center for Association Leadership invited Thomson to perform at their annual Summit Dinner held at the National Building Museum.

Some of us were nervous to sing for a crowd of over 800 people!

But in the end, we were confident and delighted to sing for our friends at ASAE and the Center!
