Welcome to our New Website!

Just a few notes on how we wrapped up 2008!

At Strong John Thomson Elementary our community partnerships are geared toward reading and math achievement, creative instruction in the arts, and student enrichment activities. We are grateful for the generosity of the organizations and individuals that support our students. At Thomson we work hard to maintain our present partners and to build new relationships each year.

The first semester of the 2008-09 school year included activities with three of our newest partners:

ASAE and the Center for Association Leadership generously provided school supplies for our 5th grade students this year. They recently sent a group of 20 volunteers to help us sort books and supplies. We are grateful for all the energy they put into keeping Thomson looking great.

We’ve recently established a partnership with DC Reads, who provides us with tutors and mentors.

The Willard Intercontinental Hotel coached Thomson’s GeoPlunge team. The Willard also invited our choir to sing in December 2008.  Our students and Dr. Camp appeared on Fox 5 News! The Willard also sponsored a tour of the facility for our Critical Literacy Circle. This group, comprised of Thomson’s best readers, had just finished Dickens’ A Christmas Carol under the guidance of our librarian, Amy Dinan. Students were delighted to view a portrait of Charles Dickens, learn about the historic Willard Hotel, and hear tales of its fabled 19th century guests, like Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain.

Some of our sustaining partners include:

The Asbury United Methodist Church is our close by neighbor who in the past has housed after school programs, provided Thanksgiving dinners, and will generously offer shelter to our students should we have an emergency and need to evacuate the building.

Booz Allen Hamilton employees mentor and tutor our first grade poetry group.  Booz Allen also provided book bags and school supplies to all students this past fall.

Everbody Wins! offers a “power lunch” where mentors work with individual children to focus on reading skills.

The Fight for Children Foundation funds our International Baccalaureate Coordinator position. In addition to their financial support, Fight for Children included Thomson in a case study highlighting our best practices. Additionally, Fight for Children sponsored city-wide forums where Dr. Camp has been able to share Thomson’s best practices with officials from public charter schools, independent schools and other District of Columbia Public Schools.

The Mayflower Hotel is a longtime partner as well. They sponsor our 5th grade promotion ceremony and provide a lovely luncheon for graduating students and parents.

The Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation (PBGC) is one of our oldest friends.  Their steady support throughout the year makes a real difference in the lives of Thomson students. Generous PBGC staff provide warm coats for children who need them plus toys and gift cards, which were featured in our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) Holiday Night Dinner raffle. We are grateful to have PBCG as a neighbor and partner.

The international law firm, Sidley Austin Powell, LLP, teaches peer mediation to students in Thomson’s upper grades.

The Embassy of Thailand partners with our 5th grade students throughout the year. Students learn about the history and culture of Thailand as embassy officials regularly visit our school. In recent months students enjoyed learning to sing Thai songs and sampled the traditional dish of Thailand, Pad Thai.

Finally, Thomson’s choir under the direction of Ms. Aisha Bowden travels all around Washington, DC.  In December alone, our choir performed at the DAR Museum Open House, the Willard Intercontinental Hotel tree lighting ceremony, PBGC’s Holiday party and Union Station’s tree lighting ceremony. Our students also entertained guests at the Music Educators’ National Conference and Eleanor Holmes Norton’s Holiday Party.

The choir’s final 2008 performance was at Thomson’s Annual Holiday Night Dinner. This popular event brings in parents, students, teachers, partners and even Thomson alumni! We had great food, great music and lots of fun celebrating together.
